What is BIM?

Publishing date: 09-01-2018 What is BIM?

BIM is a working method in which a 3D Building Information Model (BIM) integrally cooperates with various disciplines in the construction sector.

The standardization committee of the American National BIM Standard describes BIM as:

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of all physical and functional characteristics of a building. A BIM model is a shared knowledge source or file with information about the building that serves as a reliable basis for making decisions during the entire life cycle of the building. So from the first design, during construction, during management to the demolition of the building.

A starting point of BIM is that different parties and teams work together in different phases of the life cycle of the building, whereby the delivery, retrieval and processing of the information in the BIM serves as support and facilitating the roles of the various stakeholders.

The requirements of a BIM are:

  • a shared digital view
  • the information in the model is actually interoperable, that is to say; different computers (software) can exchange and use the files
  • the exchange is based on open standards
  • the exchange must be possible in the language of the participants in the project

From a practical point of view, BIM is therefore dependent on the perspective of the relevant participants in the process:

  • For a project as a whole, BIM stands for information management: data that contributes to and is shared by all participants in the project. BIM provides the right information at the right person at the right time.
  • For project participants, BIM stands for an interoperable process for the delivery of the project; together determine how individual teams work and how many teams work together to design, design, build and operate the building.
  • For the design team, BIM stands for integrated design: deploying technological solutions, stimulating creativity, providing more feedback and encouraging teams to achieve better performance.
